There are at least 10.65 Million blog posts published each day. How to write great blog titles with all that competition. That’s a huge amount of competition to get noticed.
Titles can make or break your blog post as they give the reader the first impression to your post. Everything starts with a title.
Without the title, people will not know what your article is about. And even if you have zero competition for the keyword you used, nobody will click your article unless your title is something catchy and gets noticed. How To Write Blog Post Titles is an art and so take notes – you will reap great rewards if you follow these steps.
1.Use A Low Competition Keyword?
If you have not heard of this term yet, you are going to be very well acquainted with it after this post.
Essentially a low hanging fruit keyword is a low competition keyword. Like a fruit tree, it is the fruit that is typically smaller (it gets less traffic), but there are many more of them and they have far less competition because most people naturally compete for the fruit at the top of the tree (the high traffic keywords).
The idea behind this approach is to get rankings. Sometimes with a brand new website it is more difficult to get ranked under more competitive terms and you will be much better off targeting low competition keywords.
In fact, this strategy can be used FOREVER...it is one that I use over and over again and it can lead to an unlimited amount of traffic to your posts.
2.Keywords Are Your Path To Rankings In Google For A Title Post
I am going to show you how I personally take a fairly new website (like we have here) and get the initial rankings in Google ticking along very nicely for me.
I come up with 5 Keywords With Under 100 QSR. QSR is Quoted Search Results and is the number of competing websites ranked in google for this exact keyword.
Your first task is to come up with a list of at least 5 low QSR (competition) keywords. Remember the goal is to look for keywords within under 100 QSR – Jaaxy my preferred keyword tool).
Here is the example of a keyword with under 100 QSR in Jaaxy
When you do a search in Jaaxy, there is a column called QSR that you will use to find out the exact competition in Google. This is the total number of competing pages that you are up against in the ENTIRE world. Under 100 is really awesome for getting rankings, even with a new website.

These keywords need to make sense so don’t add a keyword to your list if it does not make sense.
3.Low Hanging Fruit Keyword In The Title
Aim for at least 60 searches per month (this is the Avg column. In the below it is 56) and competition (QSR) below 100. The lower, the better.
I would usually target 50-100 searches per month once your site has aged a few months and a QSR of 30 or lower if your blog is new and then move to a higher QSR of 300 once your blog is established for a few months.
Don’t worry so much about the number of searches per month because as you add articles, your traffic will accumulate, too.
4.For SEO-Sake, Limit Your Characters To 60
I have mentioned this at the start of the post but to avoid getting it cut off in the search engine search results, use a maximum of 60 characters (that includes spaces and other punctuation).
If the title cannot fit 60 characters, use your keyword in the first part of your title so that people will still see it before it gets cut.
Your blog’s meta title and description are what search engines use to showcase results. Blog entries with extremely long meta titles and descriptions aren’t properly displayed, as in the above example, thus impacting rank and the likelihood of someone actually clicking on your blog.
Similarly, blog entries with extremely short meta titles and descriptions aren’t taking full-advantage of the opportunity to optimize with relevant keywords and geo-targets. Take a look at the examples above– which result would you be more likely to click?
5.Make Sure That The Title Is Captivating
There are several ways you can make a captivating titles. Some people would add negative words such as “scam, critical, avoid, do not.”
Sometimes it is also good to state a problem and a solution, all in 60 characters.
Regardless of the techniques that you have in writing a title, make sure that it is something that you will click on, should you be the target audience.
Quick tricks on how to write great blog titles:
- Use Numbers in the title – 7 Tips…., 20 great Ways to…, 101 Strategies etc
- Use Action Verbs – Acquire, Reap, Take, Go, Recover, Build, Grab, fulfil, Profit etc
- Use Trigger Words – Free, Secret, You, Proven, More, Yes
- Use Of Negative Words – Stop, Worst, Avoid, Mistakes
6.Use The Product Name For Product Reviews
People often search for product reviews of the products that they intend to buy. Using the product name in the title would attract possible buyers since these are the people who already know what choices they have and are later in the buying cycle.
They just need to validate their decision by researching more about the exact product.
In the above example on a Google Search for “didgeridoo stand” we’ve highlighted the Natural or Organic Search results vs the Paid or Adwords Search Results in Google
7.How to Write Great Blog Titles – Look At Your Competition
This is something I am sure that you have heard before. See what others are doing and re-engineer this backwards back to your site.
Ask yourself which titles worked best for them, which angles did they use? It doesn’t take long to come up with a few provisional title ideas, and I’ve always found it useful to run these past a colleague to get a sense of which one is most effective.

8.Give Justice To The Title
After you get the people to click your article title, make sure that you have a helpful content to justify the title.
Sometimes, people would go for the “click bait titles” and yes, they do get clicks. But after you have failed to deliver quality content, your audience’s expectations, they will never visit your site again.
Always provide helpful content so that people will start to trust you.
And we know that with TRUST, people will start listening to your recommendations and that is when the money will start to come in.

9.How to Write Great Blog Titles – Using Numbers On Blog Post Title
Start off your title with numbers. It draws people’s attention. It’s a great way to tell your audience how much exactly they’re going to get.
The best numbers to use are 5 or 10 as shown by Median Studies.
Studies show that digits work better than words (So instead of writing “ten”, write “10”).
10.Use Some Power Words In the Title
Not all words are created equal – some evoke a powerful response in readers and it can be well worth your while to find out what they are.
It’s difficult to compile a list of these ‘power words’ but a few that I’ve found that can work well are:
- Free – there’s something about the idea of getting something for nothing that triggers a response in most of us.
- Stunning – I use words like ‘stunning’ on my Instagram a lot. These words are ‘big claim’ words that draw people into the post to see if it matches up
- Discover – everyone likes to make discoveries. Another their related word is ‘revealed’.
- Secrets – this triggers a response because it promises to show you something you don’t yet know. Similarly – you could use ‘Little Known Ways to…’ as an alternative to ‘secrets’.
- Easy – similarly to ‘free’ – we all like ‘easy’ don’t we? – also use ‘quick’. Better still – what about ‘quick and easy’?
One Last Thing
I suggest that you do the “Blog Test” for each of your posts and ask yourself these three questions when writing your blog title:
- Who is your ideal / target visitor is?
- What’s highly desired by your target visitor?
- What sorts of words will resonate with them?
This success metric will ensure that you are writing to the reader and this will gain you more traffic to your blog.
